'With washes of transparent color, the artist is able to capture light and atmosphere, achieving luminous effects that suggest immediacy and freshness. Though watercolor offers an opportunity for rich, expressive results, many painters defy the fluidity of the medium by controlling their brush strokes to create images of uncompromising realism. Both modes of execution challenge the watercolorist, yet captivate the viewer.'
